This Years GoPetFriendly Winners for Dog-Friendly Travel Destinations

Bar Harbor, Maine, with 165 miles of dog-friendly hiking trails in Acadia National Park, a huge dog park with a swimming pond, and a dog-friendly schooner cruise and whale watch.

Bend, Oregon, which has 51 miles of trails in town and 13 off-leash areas, not to mention a brewery with a dog-friendly patio and a welcome mat rolled out for two- and four-legged family members at the Riverhouse Hotel.

Cape San Blas, Florida, where dog-friendly beaches stretch for miles and water lovers can charter a dog-friendly boat for a day of deep sea fishing.

Carmel, California, home to an off-leash, white-sand beach that the site says “most dogs only dream about,” along with top-notch pet-friendly hotels, more than a dozen restaurants that welcome doggy diners — even dog-welcoming shops and boutiques. (No wonder Carmel was GoPetFriendly readers’ top choice in 2013 for pet travelers.)

Nantucket, Massachusetts, an island you can get to via a ferry on which dogs ride for free (or on a half-hour plane ride that welcomes pets in the passenger cabin for just $10 each way) and, once you arrive, several public beaches (and inns) that welcome dogs.

Portland, Oregon, perhaps the only city with 26 — count ‘em — 26 dog bakeries and, to burn off those calories, 70 miles of hiking and walking trails in Forest Park, followed by a night at the extraordinarily dog-friendly RiverPlace Hotel.

San Diego, California, a haven for those seeking dog-friendly beaches and parks and a good place for larger dogs at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort and smaller ones at the historic Hotel del Coronado.

Woodstock, Vermont, at which Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park offers 20 miles of dog-friendly carriage roads and trails crisscrossing its 550 acres and Sugarbush Farm allows dogs to walk on leash through the maple trees while their owners sample award-winning Cheddar cheese and maple syrup — and everyone in the family rests comfy at places like the dog-friendly Kendron Valley Inn.
