Advances in Veterinary Stem Cell Research

Stems cells used to research ways to cure canine diseases have come from parts of the body that include umbilical tissue, bone marrow, and even body fat. Now, scientists in Japan have found a way to get stem cells from dogs’ blood, which can help accelerate the process for reversing dire conditions in our pets through advances in stem cell medicine, known broadly as regenerative therapy.

The blood doesn’t have stem cells per se. Investigators from Osaka Prefecture University have found a way to turn the developed, specialized cells in the blood into basic stem cells by introducing a specific set of genes into them. The newly created stem cells can then be used to impact cellular health in an area of the body that is diseased.
