Then comes doggie in the baby carriage!

Q: Once in a while I’ve seen people taking a walk with their dog in a stroller. Isn’t that just a bit too precious? And doesn’t it keep a dog from relieving himself and also sniffing the great outdoors?

Dear Ms. Lively,

A: We hear you. Pooches in strollers sound like overly-pampered dogs in glittery tiaras. But for some dogs, riding in a stroller may be a way for them to see the great outdoors when they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. Any dog who can’t walk much — an elderly pet or one who has severe limb limitations or who has recently undergone surgery and is still recovering — might very much enjoy being wheeled along after doing his “business” very close to home. The outing provides some fresh air, and interesting scents, sights, and sounds will still reach him. Additionally, in the hot weather, certain brachycephalic dogs who can’t exercise in the heat might like a lift. And some dogs simply enjoy the ride, especially if you use a stroller to jog or take long walks that cover distances a dog wouldn’t be able to cover on his own. There are even pet jogging strollers for sale.

Not all dogs will take to it. And some dogs may need to be adjusted slowly — by getting used to being in a stroller in the house first and then building up distance little by little. But in cases where physical activity has to be limited, it might be just the thing.

You don’t necessarily have to use a stroller manufactured specifically for dogs. You can use a baby stroller as long as your dog doesn’t exceed the stroller’s weight limit and can remain safely secured as you move along. Also, the seat has to be able to recline fully if your pet can’t fit in the seat when it’s upright.

Bottom line: Don’t automatically knock the idea of a dog in a stroller if you happen to see it. Strollers provide good environmental enrichment for those dogs who might not be able to have it on their own four feet.
