Should Your Dog Get a Summer Crewcut?

Not so fast with the shears!

Giving your dog a summer buzz cut can actually make her feel warmer, not cooler. That’s because hair on a dog insulates her from the heat.  The coat creates an air chamber between the hairs that does not conduct heat easily. (It also makes it hard for cold air to get to a dog in winter.)

Additionally, hair on a dog protects her from dehydration because the hair coat prevents the loss of too much moisture through her skin. Finally, not cutting a dog’s hair protects her from sunburn, especially if she is light pigmented. It stops the skin from being directly exposed to UV radiation.
