In It For the Long Game

You probably already know that the smaller the dog, the longer it lives, on average. Chihuahuas and Chinese cresteds can live up to 17 years, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC), while a Pomeranian might live for 16 years. But for those who want a dog that’s going to live a long canine life yet is bigger than what can fit into a pocketbook, there are some medium-size breeds that often go to at least a decade and a half. These include Australian shepherds, cocker spaniels, and whippets. Even a Belgian Malinois, who might weigh 55 pounds, can sometimes live to 16 years, says the AKC.
